Jean-Christophe Bouzy is Julia Ducournau's editor. He cut Raw, the Palme d'Or-winning Titane, and her latest film Alpha, and he co-wrote Titane as well. Ducournau makes some of the most physical and uncomfortable films working today, and a lot of why they land is in the edit: when to linger, when to cut, how long to hold an audience in a body-horror image before letting them off the hook. We talked about that collaboration, the discipline of editing transgression so it provokes rather than just shocks, and what it is like to build films this singular from the inside. Ducournau's films get under your skin and stay there, and a lot of that credit belongs to the person assembling them.
